Health Communicators - Helping New Communities Access Health Services

Health Communicators was a pilot project within Aston-Mansfield Community Involvement Unit and set up in collaboration with Newham Primary Care Trust's Health Improvement and Prevention Programme (HIPP).

It was set up to help new communities learn about and access health services in Newham more efficiently.

The project aimed to recruit and involve 'health communicators' from six of the newer local communities over a six month period. Health communicators would work within their communities to highlight the differences between the healthcare system in Newham and of that of their countries of origin, in order to overcome misunderstandings and misconceptions arising from the differences in healthcare systems. The project sought to help to highlight any specific service needs associated with a particular community.

The report of the project was finalised in October 2009 and is available to download - see below.
