History of Aston-Mansfield

The first Durning Hall was built in 1884 in Elsa Street in Limehouse alongside a Unitarian Church. The Durning and Lawrence families were pioneers for women's suffrage and social reform. It was their initiatives which created Aston Charities. Mansfield College Oxford, a Congregational foundation, decided in 1889 to send students to settle in Canning Town to help the young men of the area. This was one of the first university settlements in the United Kingdom. To download a word document about the history of the two organisations, click here. To find out more about the settlement movement in this country see bassac the British Association of Settlements and Social Action Centres. Go to IFS the International Federation of Settlements for information about the settlement movement in the USA and the rest of the world.
