| Recycle your mobile phones and raise money for Aston-Mansfield!

As fashions change and technology moves on, many people change their mobile phones on a regular basis, typically using them for only 18 months before being replaced. Most of these phones will initially be stored away in cupboards and drawers, creating a stockpile of used phones that could end up in the rubbish. However, just by dropping your old handset into one of our community centres, you could support us in raising money and you will also be helping the environment.
We collect old and used mobile phones and turn them into money to support our work in our two community centres, Durning Hall and the Froud Centre. In addition to providing funding for us, this is a great opportunity for Aston-Mansfield to promote recycling, with your help.
By 2005 about 100 million phones per year were being replaced in the EU alone. For safety reasons, these phones should be disposed of responsibly. Waste from mobile phone products is a subject of rising concern around the world; the 100 million phones already mentioned weigh 250,000 tonnes. The waste also contains many toxic substances, including arsenic, antimony, beryllium, cadmium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, zinc, and brominated flame retardants, which can be released into the air and groundwater when burned in incinerators or disposed of in landfills, creating threats to human health and the environment.
To do your bit to help your community and the planet, just hand your unwanted phones into the Reception desks at Durning Hall in Earlham Grove, Forest Gate, or the Froud Centre, Toronto Avenue, Manor Park. This small action could make a world of difference. |
