LOCAL SPACE WALK FOR ASTON-MANSFIELD An impressive £4,235 was raised for Aston-Mansfield when all 21 staff from Local Space Housing Association took part in a 10k walk around the Victoria Dock, Royal Albert Dock and the King George V Dock in October 2007. The money was raised through each staff member getting sponsored by friends and family, as well as asking all Local Space business partners to sponsor the event. Local Space themselves also made a donation. Zoe Pratten, one of the organisers of the walk, said, ‘At Local Space, we feel that it is important to work with local charities. Where we provide sustainable housing to the residents of Newham, we recognise the huge importance of supporting those who provide community assistance and support for all.” This is a brilliant sum of money and we really appreciate the effort of all the staff who got involved with this brilliant initiative. We send them our congratulations on completing the course and our heartfelt thanks for making us the beneficiaries of their day out on the docks! Set up in 2006, Local Space Housing Association turns Housing Benefit into bricks and mortar to add 500 affordable homes a year to the social housing stock in London's East End. It has done this through a partnership with the London Borough of Newham that changes temporary housing into permanent homes for homeless people. The Association buys ten properties a week on the open housing market with a Royal Bank of Canada loan of £200 million and a Housing Corporation grant of £25 million. The homes are brought up to the Government's Decent Homes Standard before they are let to tenants nominated by Newham. As well as this, Local Space also provides key-worker accommodation, housing social workers, teachers and nurses within Newham. This provides a unique service to Newham, ensuring that the key-workers have quality affordable accommodation, and that homeless families in Newham are provided with quality homes in which they can become settled as a family. |
