On Saturday 6th September, we opened our doors for a free, fun-filled community day, to celebrate 35 years of the Aston-Mansfield Community Centre (formally known as the Froud Centre, now often shortened to AMCC).

The day was a chance to celebrate our heritage, spend time with the community and have some fun!

Throughout the day, we had a range of interactive activities for all ages, including a bouncy castle, arts and crafts, and a showcase of our heritage project: New Voices, Old Stories.

This youth-led heritage programme, saw young people investigate our heritage, and reframe old stories from the past 100 years into new voices.

Across the centre, different areas highlighted our history and the history of the area including:

  • The history of the Froud Centre – our projects and responses to changing community needs
  • A video on crime and its impact on young people
  • The importance of art and creativity
  • Creating opportunities across the generations
  • Advice and community support through the years
  • Responding to young people’s needs with a focus on our youth survey1
  • A ‘scrapbook’ documenting our previous trips to the seaside. The scrapbook shared the voices of children, mothers and grandmothers, focusing on womanhood and what it means to them. There was also an opportunity for attendees to share their own memories, and advice for future generations

New Voices, Old Stories is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to support our young people to explore our heritage and reframe stories in new and exciting ways.

We also had plenty of options for people to get creative with our Community Art piece. This led to the creation of some beautiful pieces.

What would a community event be without food? Sharing a meal together is one of the oldest community activities and we enjoyed sharing delicious food together at the event.

It was a brilliant day, and we loved having the community come together and commemorate 35 years of the centre.

We look forward to continue working together over the next 35 years and beyond!

About The National Lottery Heritage Fund

The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the largest funder for the UK’s heritage. Using money raised by National Lottery players we support projects that connect people and communities to heritage.

“Our vision is for heritage to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future. From historic buildings, our industrial legacy and the natural environment, to collections, traditions, stories and more. Heritage can be anything from the past that people value and want to pass on to future generations.

“We believe in the power of heritage to ignite the imagination, offer joy and inspiration, and to build pride in place and connection to the past.”
