Young people develop project management skills as part of Aston-Mansfield’s Project Management Masterclass.

For young people not already in work or in full time education, getting the skills and experience to land a great job is not always easy.

Aston-Mansfield’s Project Management Masterclass was designed to equip young people with the skills and practical experience they would need to thrive in the realm of project management.

The Masterclass ran in November and December 2023.

Aimed at Newham’s young people (aged 17–24) who were not in full time education or work, the project masterclass consisted of a Taster Day and 5-Day Intensive Course to help young people develop a range of project management skills and boost their CV.

Taster Day

The Taster Day explored the different components of project management through fun and interactive activities. All 13 young people who attended the taster day also attended the full course.

“Having young facilitators and doing fun activities that allow us to use the skills we have learned was great, I enjoyed coming to the course, it was engaging as it did not feel like school/college” (Young Person)

Masterclass

The 5-day masterclass was attended by 16 young people and taught them a range of project management skills such as:

  • Team building
  • Time management
  • Planning and organisation
  • Budgeting
  • Communication
  • Leadership
  • Troubleshooting
  • And more

The young people also got an opportunity to utilise the skills they had learned by successfully planning and delivering their own small-scale social action projects.

They were able to put into practise what they had learned, including developing project timelines, budgets, allocating resources effectively, troubleshooting and conducting post project reviews to document lessons for future improvement.

“I think I improved on quite a few skills from when I first started, I am happy I have a new skill to add to my CV, as I am currently looking for work” (Young Person)

100% of the young people who completed feedback forms said they would recommend the course to others.

They also all signed up to our youth network to stay in touch regarding future projects, training, volunteering and work opportunities.

The course finished with a fun social to celebrate the young people’s achievements.

The Project Management Masterclass was funded by the Prince’s Trust as part of their Get Started programme.
